contrasts with these view from past years:
There have been 'challenging' times in previous years; however, grazing has been more intense in 2023. I can tell you lots of deterrents that don't :
.a granular substance placed around plants that are designed to make the deer scram.
. small pieces of a well known hand soap place at intervals
.coffee grounds
.aromatic plants such as lavender and thyme
.lots of marigolds
.most recently, ultrasonic sensors that emit sounds and flashing lights
.a neighbor indicated that the presence of her indoor dogs and their barking have not always been effective.
Up until recently high fencing has not been thought a realistic option given the size of the lawn. Today, we are considering a high fence (8 feet seems to be minimal, given a deer's capacity for jumping great heights) for next year.
In addition to destruction to vegetation, deer are a huge threat for vehicular traffic. Last summer, a deer jumped into the street one block from our house and totaled an approaching vehicle. One of my brothers remarked once that he had killed more deer with his pickup truck that year than most hunters.
What have you found effective in deterring Bambi ?

Dear Ron,
ReplyDeleteSome years ago the company I worked for as a chief engineer was approached by State Farm Insurance to build something that could be attached to a car to ward off collisions with deer ... after all, those "deer whistles" were all the rage.
I began by checking the hearing range of deer and discovered it paralleled those of humans. That meant the so-called ultrasonic deer whistle couldn't possibly work. We then did some experiments that verified that was true.
Since my boss was a very successful deer hunter, he took an unusual interest in the project and gave us great leeway in regard to time.
I then contacted the Department of Natural Resources in my home state of Wisconsin ... a state of high vehicle-deer interactions. They had done considerable experimenting and discovered what we had ... the most a deer did was raise its head, look about, and then go back to whatever it was doing before.
I also pressed manufacturers of the whistles for their data. No return calls!
Finally I connected with the equivalent of the DNR in Sweden as they have a big problem as well. Their answer: 3-meter-tall fences ... the only thing they found to reliably keep deer away.
Your experience may very ... but probably not!
Feed them away from your flowers. My herd gets all my raw veggie and fruit scraps. They hate cabbage though! I also feed them deer apples or deer corn, whichever is in season. Tractor Supply usually has the best prices. They don’t much care for tomatoes either. And they LOVE bird seed, I stock up when buy one, get one free at Ace Hardware. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteWe used some kind of safe spray that smells like urine and that kept them away.
ReplyDeleteWe have/ used "imustgarden" Deer repellent. Made by a company based in Chapel Hill. Mint scent, rain resistant, People and pet safe. https://www.imustgarden.com Good luck. Those deer love daylilies.
